Seeing the Beauty in Everything

Seeing the Beauty in Everything
An Exploration of Orchids

I have a reputation for seeing the beauty in everything. But, I hear you ask, aren’t some things just ugly? No! I have the sort of mind that goes around seeing the beauty in everything. That might be a pile of firewood, a railway station roof, a piece of machinery – or a cabbage. There is always some little aspect of beauty waiting to be given a polish.

Seeing The Beauty In A Cabbage?

Green and Purple Ornamental Kale

Ummm, afraid so. Ornamental cabbages and kale to be precise but ordinary cabbages also have a beauty not just so colorful! As the summer flowers start to die back the ornamental brassicas, also known as flowering cabbages and kale, come into their own.

Although they have a strong cabbage-type smell and can be eaten (though their leaves are bitter) they are really grown for their color and architectural value. They give a garden a boost at a time of year when things are starting to get a bit dreary.

It isn’t just the colorful ones that are beautiful. Look at this one that is really just like a small version of an open cabbage. The beautiful rosette in the center, the slight crinkling to the leaves, the beautiful veining on the leaves. Tell me you can’t see the beauty in that!

You Can See the Beauty in Orchids Without Trying

An Exploration of Orchids

Some things don’t need a lot of help for you to see the beauty in them. Orchids, for example, are stunning ornamental, exotic flowers. But I find they are very ‘in your face’, sitting on small stems that have to be supported. In fact the plant itself is very drab without the flowers.

I thought it would be fun to produce a piece that took some beautiful orchids and blended them in with their background. Or, to be more accurate, bring up the potential beauty in the background and tone down the orchids! That is why I called the piece ‘An Exploration of Orchids’ and I have to say I rather like it!
