Well, I kid you not, World Naked Gardening Day is an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday in May. The mind boggles how this particular celebratory day came into being – so needless to say I hit the internet to find out!

History of World Naked Gardening Day
According to Wikipedia, World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD) was founded by the consulting editor of Nude & Natural Magazine, Mark Storey, in collaboration with Jacob Gabriel, a permaculturist. It was established as a project under the Body Freedom Collaborative and was inaugurated in 2005.
According to the organizers, “besides being liberating, nude gardening is second only to swimming as an activity that people are most ready to consider doing nude”.
It Can Be A Dangerous Pastime
Ant Attacks
Okey dokey, well they have probably never tried naked gardening here in my part of Italy where your bits are likely to get munched on by any number of stingy, biting critters. My ex-husband was attacked by an ant would you believe, it fixed itself to his eye lid and took one helluva lot to remove. Mind you my sister and I were hysterical with laughter at the time which didn’t really help.
Sharp Objects
I would be reluctant to let Barnet Boy use any heavy duty gardening equipment in the buff, particularly hedge trimmers – though thinking about it, anything with sharp edges! I think the wellies are a nice touch…
Kitten Attack
The other hazard in our neck of the woods is of course cats (we have 16). At this point I would like to applaud Barnet Boy for his willingness to act as a model for the photos for today’s blog in spite of the danger of a cat attacking anything dangling… nuff said. Mind you, he has had practice as he has a history of doing Tai Chi naked outside whilst getting a suntan at the same time (who said men can’t multi-task).
Naked People?
So will we see lots of naked people working in their gardens? No, apparently most people choose to do their naked gardening in secluded areas. We will just have to rely on social media reporting – you might like to follow the World Naked Gardening Facebook page? I leave you with the words of the Tucson Weekly “Pants Down: Rakes Up. World Naked Gardening Day is Approaching“.

LOL, who knew “naked gardening day” was a thing? I live in the middle of town, so I think I’ll pass. My neighbors don’t need to see me bending over the side of the house we are going to plant in later this spring. Thank you for the amusement, Dorothy!
