Be Bald and Be Free – Whilst Eating a Dessert

Be Bald and Be Free

14 October is ‘Be Bald and Be Free Day’ and also ‘National Dessert Day’. Both made me think of my husband, Barnet Boy and my blog ‘Be Bald and Be Free – Whilst Eating a Dessert’ is dedicated to him, supreme dessert lover and almost bald person. He is also my art model and does a good job!

National Dessert Day

You mean I wasn’t supposed to eat this?

It may be National Dessert Day (14 October) but everyday is dessert day in my house if you are Barnet Boy.  That means when we were short of a photograph depicting brownies for a Cherry Cheesecake Brownie recipe on a magazine I guest blogged for, Barnet Boy naturally stepped into the breach. We went for a fun shot of him pretending to have eaten all the brownies. Which he probably would have done given a chance.

Satisfying a Sweet Tooth

Barnet Boy’s favourite dessert is lemon meringue pie but he is also partial to Eton Mess (more meringues you note). To say he has a sweet tooth would be an understatement.

As the weather changes and we move from sunbathing to log fires, his ice cream consumption lessens, dramatically affecting the Italian economy. An ‘ice cream dessert twice a day man’ his tastes in ice cream vary but favourites are ‘nociolatte’ (cream of hazlenut), ‘lime and raspberry’ and ‘caramel’. Oh, and he is very partial to the occasional ‘Magnum’.

Desserts from now until April will be somewhat different, focusing on apple pie, apple crumble, apple fool (yeah, well we got a good apple crop this year) probably with profiteroles thrown in at some stage. He will suffer in silence of course.

Graham (aka Barnet Boy)

Coinciding with (though not necessarily connected to) getting a pierced ear, Barnet Boy decided to embrace the fact that he was going bald rather than fight it. “My hair was always greasy two hours after I had washed it (slight exaggeration of course)” he says. “So shaving what was left really short was a great way to manage it and over the years it has saved me a fortune at the hairdresser!“.  He says it really does give you a sense of freedom so perhaps this national day is not as daft as it sounds.

The Captive Mind

Barnet Boy has modeled for various images over the years where I needed to have a human figure involved. One of my favorites is ‘The Captive Mind’ where being asked to strip naked and be tied up with rope was met with a quiet sigh. He also stripped naked for my piece ‘The Naked Gardener‘ for my blog on World Naked Gardening Day.

All in all he does a good job of living with an artist!
