Fall Color in Central Italy

Think November in the Northern Hemisphere and you think fall color (or autumn color depending on where you live). I said in another blog that we don’t get the same spectacular displays of color that you see in some parts of the world. But what we get is a golden glow of color on our soft countryside.

‘Fall’ Came Early

Autumn Golden Colors Umbria

IN 2017, we have had an appalling year, in weather terms, with an incredibly long period of drought and a lot of wildfires. In late August, with trees dying back and conserving their energy such that their leaves went brown, you could almost believe it was autumn. A lot of leaves fell during September too and recent rains (thank you, thank you) have brought down more. But there is still plenty of fall color to enjoy as you drive around Umbria and Tuscany.

The Glory That is Vineyards in Fall Color

I live near the border with Tuscany and one of the major wine growing areas of Central Italy. This means the countryside changes from miles and miles of olive groves to miles and miles of vineyards. And vines are deciduous so they can make a spectacular splash of color as the leaves turn. I found this vineyard near San Casciano dei Bagni in Tuscany – just a mass of golden colour.

The Autumn Guardian

This wonderful tree was placed right on the edge of the vineyard, almost as if it was guarding the place. It is an old tree but as you can see it has seen some heavy pruning in the past but still shows some growth from this year. It’s leaves are starting to fall.

Autumn Berries Add To The Landscape

What can you add to an image of vineyards in fall color? What about a group of cypress trees (because this is Tuscany after all) and some gorgeous blue velvety wild berries?

Vineyards Nestle In the Hillside

While Tuscany has fields and fields of vineyards, some quite large, there are still smaller vineyards on patches of land. Many people hold on to the family tradition of making their own wine, in the same way we make olive oil where I live in Umbria.

This picture sums up for me that way of life. A small vineyard nestles on the edge of some scrub against a backdrop of a small wooded area. Behind you can see the outline of the hill rising up behind, which shows you how this vineyard sits in a small valley.

I have so many beautiful images of fall color in this part of Italy I made them into a short video. I found some nice music to go with it so click and enjoy!
