Finding The Dead Tree

I was out walking around our land and came across a glorious old oak tree that was clearly not going to come back after the winter. This is a very old tree, we have seen it from the front of our house for over 20 years now. Now it is just a rather sad looking skeleton. But it used to be huge and full of life. I found it quite sad that the tree had died. It made me want to make a record of it’s life so I took a few photographs of it.

Working On A Portrait of the Tree

The tree has been such a part of our view for so long I wanted to create a portrait of the tree. Using photo manipulation techniques to ensure I captured the spirit of the tree in the image. So I started working on one of the photographs. But as I started to create the first image, a whole story about the tree started to take shape in my mind.

Developing the Collection

As the story began to reveal itself to me, I quickly jotted down notes. Then I created different images of the tree to fit the different parts of the story.  The final Tree Layers Collection comprises nine images, shown here in a collage which includes the original photograph I took of the tree. Prints are available to purchase of each of the nine main images.

Having got the images and story, I approached an artist colleague to help me make the video. I hadn’t been making videos very long and I wanted to record my own narration and interweave it with the images and background music. At that time it was a bit too complicated for me to manage on my own.

The Tree Layers Collection Video

The final product from my work with the Tree Layers Collection was the video. The video was very well received with lots of kind comments. I will leave you to make your own mind up. Here is the Tree Layers Collection Video with my own narration.
