What Music Do You Listen To When You Are Painting?

Dance Of The Flowers Hammer Smash

My response to the question ‘what music do you listen to when you are painting?’ builds on earlier question and answer blogs I have written. Like my response to a question asking what art I have in my own living room. Ahhh… my musical taste. Best described as eclectic and interesting I think.

What Music Do You Listen To When You Are Painting?

I have said several times before that I create an atmosphere in my studio by burning incense and playing loud music. Before you ask the next obvious question, I like Nitraj Original incense sticks.

My choice of music depends on what painting I am doing. Sometimes I put music on and I actually don’t hear any of it as I am so wrapped up in my art.

Recently my music has been Bhangra as I work on my acrylic pour and hammer smash paintings. I like anything with a good beat to it so that I can dance around while I am working. But I have some old favorites that I play regularly too.

My Favourite Tracks

Anything by Enigma is good. This is one of my favorite tracks to paint to, from the album Voyageur. I have the CD player set to really pump out the bass. The trouble is I dance rather more than paint!

The other huge track that I love when I am working is from Tubular Bells III. I love the way it builds up and then explodes. I like to play it particularly when I am getting tired but I need one final push to finish a painting.

More Serious Painting

Occasionally I get a bee in my bonnet about something and my painting takes a serious turn and the music I play reflects that. For example, Protect The Children was a painting that took a lot of my emotion and the music I played reflected that.

Protect The Children

This painting was created over several weeks, with sometimes only short visits to the studio to work on one particular aspect. The music I played was more meditative, Japanese flute music (Shakuhachi), Buddhist chanting, that sort of thing. That is until the final push to finish when I was adding the highlights to the paintings. And, you guessed it, the track from Tubular Bells III came into play.
