Three Lenten Rose Blooms
I talked about my love of lenten roses in an earlier blog. And of course they are not roses in spite of the name. Additional confusion is added by the fact they are also known as the ‘Christmas Rose’ as they flower during the winter and during Lent. Which of course takes us back a full circle to the name Lenten Rose.
The Lenten Rose is actually a hellebore. The word helleborus comes from Greek “hellein” which means food and “bora” which means to kill – which gives a subtle hint that the plant is toxic if consumed. Or not so subtle! As was the case with many poisons, the plant was used as a medicine in ancient times, using small doses. Myth has it that an overdose of medication containing helleborus resulted in the death of Alexander the Great! But that is just one of many myths about his death which we can’t take too seriously as nobody knows the truth.
